Compare the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry near Waterford

Groton-area drivers are certainly not short on choices in the midsize sedan segment, but there are two models that always seem to get the most attention: the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. The Accord entered the market first, but both models are industry veterans that have been in continuous production for nearly 40 years-a testament to their quality and popularity. With both models boasting storied legacies, the two have developed quite the rivalry over the years. At first glance, they seem equally matched. However, upon closer investigation, the superiority of the Accord becomes clear.

2019 Honda Accord vs. 2019 Toyota Camry: Powertrain

  • The base engines of these two vehicles are evenly matched. The Accord comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that makes 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5-liter four cylinder engine of the Camry generates more horsepower (203) but falls behind in torque (184 pound-feet). The  result is that Accord offers greater acceleration for confident highway passing maneuvers.
  • Both models come with available hybrid engines, with the Accord offering significantly more power (212 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque) than the Camry (176 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque).

2019 Honda Accord vs. 2019 Toyota Camry: Interior and Utility

  • The Honda Accord offers greater trunk space than the Toyota Camry (16.7 cubic-feet to 15.1 cubic-feet), but that's not all. The designers of the Accord paid special attention to small-item storage options, adding several convenient consoles, compartments, pockets, and trays. The Camry has standard small-item storage compartments, but they're not as numerous or handy, or as conveniently sized.
  • Both Accord and Camry offer well-equipped cabins with quality materials, comfortable seating, and intuitive technology. However, the Accord offers more spacious seating, with greater front head room, leg room, shoulder room, and hip room than Camry. In the back, Accord has greater rear hip room, leg room, and shoulder room. In short, the Honda Accord exceeds the Toyota Camry in total passenger volume by more than five cubic-feet (105.6 to 100.4 cubic-feet).
  • Both models offer infotainment systems with 7-inch touchscreens and smartphone integration. But, the Accord supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Android Auto is noticeably absent from the Camry line-up.

2019 Honda Accord vs. 2019 Toyota Camry: Driving

  • While the Camry has noticeably improved in recent years, the Honda Accord is still the leader in handling and drivability. Accord changes directions like its second nature, and touring models come equipped with multilink adaptive suspension, which keeps it steady around corners and on windy roads. The experts at called the Accord "one of the best-handling sedans around1."
  • The Camry is decently composed, but it's not as confidence-inspiring when it comes to twists and turns. Again, we'll defer to Edmunds experts who say: "…it bobs vertically on bumpy, twisting roads more than we'd like. At modest cornering speeds, there's quite a bit of tire howl2."
